Abstract

The Middle East is a region that has been characterized by conflict and instability for centuries. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century led to a power vacuum that has been filled by competing regional powers, as well as by foreign intervention. The region is also home to a number of major security challenges, including terrorism, sectarianism, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
