This paper explores the significant contributions of African oral literature as a tool for national development, focusing specifically on Tiv oral poetry. It examines renditions by various Tiv bards to highlight how this oral tradition transcends traditional themes to address contemporary socio-economic and political issues. The study underscores the relevance of Tiv oral poetry in championing social change and national development. Additionally, it critically revisits the portrayal of African oral literature by Western scholars, challenging misconceptions that have marginalized its cultural and intellectual value. The paper advocates for the removal of such erroneous perspectives to enable African oral literature to gain rightful recognition on the global literary stage. Ultimately, the study aims to inspire further scholarly inquiry into other aspects of Tiv oral traditions as instruments for national growth and transformation
