Abstract

Tourism is a vital industry that plays a significant role in the long-term economic development of countries worldwide. Recognized as one of the most rapidly expanding economic sectors, tourism serves as a key alternative to traditional sectors such as industrialization in promoting economic growth and alleviating poverty. As a major export category, tourism ranks fourth globally, following fuels, chemicals, and automotive products. The growth of tourism has a positive impact on a nation's gross domestic product (GDP) and employment opportunities, contributing substantially to the economic landscape. Additionally, tourism’s interaction with foreign exchange earnings fosters further economic development, particularly in developing countries. The tourism industry contributes 9.5% to global GDP, accounts for 7% of global jobs, and makes up 6% of the world's exports. Notably, tourism represents 30% of the world's exports in services, with developing countries benefiting from 45% of the sector's total export value. This paper explores the multifaceted contributions of tourism to global economies, with a focus on its influence on GDP, employment, foreign exchange earnings, and poverty reduction, while emphasizing its growing importance as a sustainable economic development strategy.
